Root Canal Aftercare
Root canal treatment helps save a tooth that would otherwise need to be removed. After your appointment, some sensitivity is completely normal. Here's what to expect and how to care for your tooth.
What to Expect After Treatment

Some tenderness or mild discomfort when biting down

Slight swelling or sensitivity in the area

A feeling of numbness for a few hours if anaesthetic was used

Temporary filling or crown until your next visit (if not completed in one session)
This discomfort usually improves within a few days.
🛏️ Aftercare Tips
🍽️ Eat soft foods
Avoid hard, chewy, or very hot/cold foods for a few days. Try soup, pasta, or mashed potatoes.
🛑 Avoid chewing on the treated side
Especially if you’ve had a temporary filling or crown – it may be more fragile.
🧼 Keep your mouth clean
Brush and floss as normal, but gently around the treated area. A warm saltwater rinse (after 24 hours) can help if the gum feels sore.
💊 Take pain relief if needed
Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be used to relieve discomfort, unless your GP has advised otherwise.
🦷 Completing the Treatment
Root canal treatment often requires two appointments. If a temporary filling or crown was placed, we’ll schedule a follow-up to finish the restoration with a permanent crown or filling. This is important to protect the tooth long-term.
